What we can learn from kids and WD-40:
Often as parents we think it is our job or responsibility to teach our children about life but at least for me it seems that I learn more from my sons than they do from me.
Perhaps that is a reflection of my level of intelligence or perhaps it is because I am always trying to learn so that is what I get. (I am hoping it is the latter.)
Either way, once again I have learned something from my eldest son. I had picked up a can of WD-40 to fix some seized up break lines on our bikes and Reid asked me, “What does WD-40 mean?”
I replied, “I think I remember the story but let’s google it and find out for sure.”
Below is what we found;
According to the company that makes WD-40: WD-40 literally stands for water displacement 40th attempt. That's the name straight out of the lab book used by the chemist who helped develop WD-40 back in 1953. Norm Larsen, was attempting to concoct a formula to prevent corrosion, a task which is done by displacing water. Norm's persistence paid off when he perfected the formula for WD-40 on his 40th try.
Which of your goals have you tried 39 times?
What are you shooting for that just one more attempt would perfect your formula?
Starting a fitness regime?
Starting a nutritional plan?
Developing a new positive habit?
Learning to play an instrument?
Taking up a fun hobby that makes you happy?
Regardless of what you have been trying you can always try one more time.
Perhaps if Norm Larsen had stopped trying after 39 attempts it would not affect your life a great deal but it would his.
How would Norm have felt about himself if he had decided to fail?
Yes, I did say decided to fail because that is how it is. Failure does not happen; it is a choice that you make.
So is success, it is a choice that you make.
So keep choosing to succeed even if it is your 40th or 140th or 400th attempt.
Can everyone reading this please do me a favour? Get out there and go for your goal ONE MORE TIME. It would make my day to hear that some of you took this advice and this was the attempt that put you over the edge and on top of your goal.
